How The NFL Was Created
Football, America's sport. The National Football League has been loved by the U.S for a whole 96 years. We wait for football season each year for our team to play and win those rings.
The start of the NFL’s creation was formed in 1922 from William McGregor from the American Professional Football Association. The APFA was founded in 1920 during that year the NFL was overlooked by the college game. Nearly a month later Ohio, Illinois, Indiana and New York: Akron Pros, Canton Bulldogs, Cleveland Indians, Dayton Triangles, Decatur Staleys, Hammond Pros, Massillon Tigers, Muncie Flyers, Racine Cardinals, Rochester Jeffersons and Rock Island Independents were the first 11 football clubs. The first football league was made was called the American Professional Football Association or the APFA. The new league needed a president so they had a debate. The representative chose a 32 year old man named Jim Thorpe. James Thorpe was an American Olympic athlete and gold medalist. Thorpe became the first Native American to win a gold medal for his home country. At that time he was know as “The World's Greatest Athlete”.
The first game involving an APFA took place on September 26, 1920, in Rock Island, Illinois. Passes were rare and coaching from the sidelines was prohibited and players competed on both offense and defense. After the first season there was no such things as playoffs, so that meant no Super Bowl. They used a balut to pick who the winning team was. As the winners did not receive diamond rings they received gold plated fobs; a chain a that attaches to a watch, they were shaped like footballs. After the season they need a new leader with with greater business knowledge. They dropped Thorpe for Joe Carr, and in 1922 they renamed it to the National Football League or the NFL. Ten APFA players along with Carr are enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Football’s presence in the U.S. has had a huge impact on Americans in the past years. From 1920 to 2016 it has just been getting more successful, the journey football has had to become the number one sport in America is truly amazing.
